1. Date: Dec 31, 2021 | Telangana High Court
Case: Dr. Shashikala Kopanati v. Union of India (WP (PIL) 136/2020)
Summary: The public interest litigation is filed stating that in the State of Telangana camels are transported from Rajasthan and they are being slaughtered in violation of the statutory provisions as contained under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and the Rules framed thereunder, Rajasthan Camel (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Act, 2015.
2. Date: Jan 04, 2022 | Telangana High Court
Case: Radha Krishna Reddy and another v. Principal Secretary Animal Husbandry Telangana State and others (WP (PIL) 70/2016)
Summary: This public interest litigation stating that there is an illegal breeding of Catfish and the farmers are feeding animal waste to the Catfish, which is very much injurious to the health.
3. Date: 13 January, 2022 | High Court of Judicature at Bombay
Case: Vets Society for Animal Welfare and Rural Development v. The State of Maharashtra and ors. (WRIT PETITION NO. 8273 OF 2021)
Summary: Learned court noted that Petitioner has not been able to place any material which demonstrates fraud or malafide or perversity and on the basis of mere allegations, tenders of Animal Birth Control Program (ABC).
4. Date: Jan 13, 2022 | Karnataka High Court
Case: Sri Prakash v. State of Karnataka (CRL.P 9670 of 2021)
Summary: Petitioners have hunted one pig with the help of 5 pistols with bullets and they were sharing the meat of the pig and were apprehended on 22.11.2021. Hence, the offence punishable under Sections 9 and 51 of Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, Sections 3, 25(1B) and 27 of Indian Arms Act, 1959, Sections 24(J) of Karnataka Forest Act, 1963 and Section 420 of IPC were invoked and they were in custody.
5. Date: Jan 18, 2022 | High Court of Orissa at Cuttack
Case: Arun Behera & Four Others v. State Of Odisha (BLAPL NO. 9689 OF 2021)
Summary: The Petitioners being in custody in connection with Kaniha Range O.R. Case No.35K of 2021-22 corresponding to 2(b)C.C. Case No.09 of 2021 on the file of learned S.D.J.M., Talcher running for commission of offence under section -9 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act read with Section-51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 have been released on bail in the aforesaid case on such terms and condition as deemed just and proper by the court.
6. Date: Jan 21, 2022 | High Court of Madras
Case: People for cattle in India v. The Chairman and another (WP NO. 2287/ 2021)
Summary: The parties and the NGO, appearing in person, are directed to come out with proper suggestions to regulate not only the stray dogs, but the pet animals. Accordingly, the scope of the writ petition is enlarged to deal with the affairs of the stray dogs as well as pet animals. Next hearing will be held on Feb 09, 2022.
7. Date: Jan 25, 2022 | High Court of Delhi
Case: Asiad Circus through its proprietor Mr. Riyazuddin v. Animal Welfare Board of India (WP(C) NO. 2873/ 2021)
Summary: The petitioner’s ‘Circus Performing Animal Registration’ certificate has been cancelled on a purported inspection conducted on 21.09.2020, when the petitioner had refused to grant inspection of the animals. The petitioner states that the concerned veterinary doctor from the State’s Animal Welfare Board had taken note of the fact that the petitioner had informed him that the animals were at that point of time not in Kanpur but in Chhindwara, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
Advisories/ Circulars
1. Date: January 11, 2022 – Animal Welfare Board of India
Subject: Celebration of Jiv Jantu Kalyan Divas and Animal Welfare Fortnight 2022
Summary: The Animal Welfare Fortnight will be celebrated throughout the country from 14.01.2022 to 30.01.2022 in a grand manner.
2. Date: Jan 21, 2022 – Animal Welfare Board of India
Subject: Request to ensure proper implementation of AWBI Advisories/ circulars issued to prevent unnecessary pain and suffering to animals amid COVID – 19 pandemic.
Summary: AWBI is in receipt of various complaints from all over the country regarding animal cruelties, feeders being harassed by RWA/ Society Association due to COVID restrictions. A list of advisories and circulars by AWBI have been referred to for proper implementation.
3. Date: 20.01.2022 – Animal Welfare Board of India
Subject: Standard operating procedure for proper implementation of the prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Care and Maintenance of Case Property Animals) Rules, 2017
Summary: AWBI vide its advisory dated 15.06.2021 has requested to issue necessary directions to properly implement the above mentioned rules.
