Does your heart ache when you see the tired security dog at the gate of hotel or software park , sniffing at car boots, walking around listelssly and breathing gas fumes. Mine too. But its s time to act, so I said, well lets do something about it and stop this outdated practice. Join me, wont you? Please sign this perition : https://www.change.org/HotelDogCruelty
Today I witnessed an upsetting sight at the narrow entrance of a posh 5 star hotel: a beautiful German Shepherd, appearing somewhat thin and evidently worried, was unjustly hit with a stick by a security guard while diligently performing his duty of sniffing cars. He cowered, uncertain, and then exhaustedly, simply went up to the next waiting car. When questioned, the guard shrugged and said that the dog tends to bark. This weak excuse is unlikely to be true but this raises a pertinent question—why employ security dogs if the solution to their behavior is cruelty?
We request Animal Welfare Board of India and Home Dept to send out a strong and clear circular to the Security & Hotel Associations to stop this redundant & archaic practice of security dogs; as well as put in a penalty for misuse. They should later put in checks in place to ensure this. We relate & understand that Airports, police , customs, army, forests etc still need, legally use and manage canine security forces. However, this clear lip service of canine security in hotels and office complexes is a mere eyewash and a charade. The only ones benefiting from this practice are the security agencies who charge a hefty monthly salary (around 35000 per dog/shift) for these tired and poorly treated dogs, and the breeders who breed them and ship out Alsatians, Malinois and Labradors for this purpose. Are these breeders even registered by the State Animal Welfare Board as mandated, and do security agencies who buy or rent these animals even check - or care?
The decision to use a canine security squad in private businesses like hotels and tech companies is made by the management, not the government . These dogs are deployed to enhance security, not to comply with a specific law. The question remains : Is it needed anymore? The archaic practice of utilizing security dogs in large software complexes and hotels, a measure that surged after being apparently mandated post the tragic 7/11 Taj Hotel attack, seems increasingly redundant and inhumane. These noble creatures, breathing toxic petrol fumes at gates or basements, are often subjected to harsh conditions, poorly treated, and exhausted, yet they are expected to perform security duties under significant stress. Some are even pregnant at security. The frantic atmosphere and negligent care not only harm the dogs but also potentially endanger the guests and staff relying on alert and capable safety measures. In top-tier hotels and massive Software Parks, the presence of overworked and undernourished dogs is sadly common. The inadequacies in their care signal a pressing need for reform in how we ensure security in these institutions. While these dogs are entrusted with vital roles, what they need is respect, proper care, and humane treatment rather than burdened existence.
Our call for action proposes a more humane, effective, and modern approach to security which does not rely on outdated practices. Investing in advanced security technologies and better training for human security personnel can not only improve safety standards but also eliminate the need for canine involvement in such harsh and unsuitable environments. We urge stakeholders in the hospitality and software industries to look within, abolish the necessity for security dogs, rehome and rehabilitate them, recognize their needs, and implement newer, kinder methods of protection. Ensuring that these animals are given the respect and care they deserve is not just a moral obligation—it is a matter of basic human empathy.
Owner's Responsibility:If security dogs are used, the management is responsible for their care, ensuring they are vaccinated, medically checked, and receive proper food and water. Protection Against Cruelty:Any form of cruelty towards the dogs is prohibited under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and the Indian Penal Code, making it a punishable offense. Community Guidelines:Managers can set guidelines for security dog handlers to ensure the dogs' behavior does not pose a risk or cause any inconvenience to residents or other employees.
Help change this system and support the call for humane treatment of animals unnecessarily used in private security. Let's innovate for a safer, kinder tomorrow by signing this petition.
