Subject: Urgent Intervention Required Regarding the Upcoming Film "Nayi Idae Yecharikae" to Prevent Backlash Against Dogs and Undermining of Public Health Efforts

Dear Sirs:

As an  organization dedicated to animal welfare and the promotion of harmonious human-animal coexistence, write to you today with a profound sense of urgency and deep concern regarding the impending release of the Kannada horror film "Nayi Idae Yecharikae", (Translation : Beware of Dog) scheduled for a release Dec 2025. While we are completely supportive of the arts and creative freedom, the title itself is divisive and fear inducing.

Based on available information (particularly an article in Bangalore Mirror today) , the film's plot revolves around a pet dog that becomes rabid, turns violent, causes a tragedy, and subsequently haunts a house. While we recognize the creative freedom of filmmakers, the specific narrative of this film is dangerously irresponsible and poses a significant threat to animal welfare and public order, for the following critical reasons:

1.     Exacerbating Fear and Anti-Dog Sentiment: India, and Karnataka in particular, is currently grappling with periods of heightened fear and misplaced anger towards street and pet dogs. This film, by its very premise, will unjustly vilify dogs, portraying them not as sentient beings capable of rabies (a preventable disease), but as vengeful monsters. This will inevitably fuel public hysteria, leading to increased fear, confrontation, and potential violence against all dogs.

2.     Direct Contradiction to Supreme Court Directives and Government Initiatives: The Honorable Supreme Court of India, along with central and state governments, has been actively working to foster compassion and peaceful coexistence between humans and animals. Concurrently, a massive national and state-level effort is underway to increase rabies vaccination coverage, ensure the availability of anti-rabies vaccines, and promote scientific and humane management of dog populations. This film's narrative is a direct and severe setback to these crucial efforts, undoing years of public education and compassion-building work.

3.     Spreading Misinformation on Rabies: Rabies is a fatal but 100% preventable disease. The film risks creating the false and horrific impression that rabies turns dogs into malevolent "zombies" destined to haunt humans, rather than explaining it as a medical condition preventable through vaccination and responsible pet ownership. This is a gross misrepresentation of a serious public health issue and will lead to panic instead of promoting preventive solutions.

4.     Undermining Animal Welfare Work: The relentless work of animal welfare organizations, government bodies like yours, and compassionate citizens to protect dogs and promote their welfare will be severely negated by the widespread release of such a film. It will reverse the tide of compassion, replacing it with fear and hatred.

In light of these grave concerns, we urgently request the Karnataka Animal Welfare Board and the SPCA, Bengaluru District, to exercise your statutory and moral authority to:

·       Immediately reach out to the producers and directors of the film "Nayi Idae Yecharikae" to review the film's content.

·       Assess the portrayal of the dog and the disease to ensure it does not contain scenes that are cruel, promote violence against animals, or misrepresent scientific facts in a way that could incite public unrest or animal cruelty.

·       Strongly counsel the filmmakers on their social responsibility and the potential real-world consequences of their narrative.

·       Insist on the inclusion of a prominent, mandatory disclaimer at the beginning and end of the film, and in all its promotional material, stating that:

o   Rabies is a preventable disease through timely vaccination of pets and street dogs.

o   The events in the film are a fictional horror narrative and do not represent the natural behavior of dogs.

o   The film supports the message of rabies prevention and encourages viewers to vaccinate their pets and report strays for vaccination to the local authorities.

The release of this film without these crucial interventions risks causing irreparable damage to the perception of dogs in our society and will hamper the vital work of rabies eradication. We must take preventive action now, before the film is released to the public, to avert a potential backlash against innocent animals.

We trust that you will treat this matter with the utmost seriousness and urgency it demands. We are happy to offer our full cooperation and support in this critical endeavour.

T

hank you for your attention to this pressing issue. We await your prompt and decisive action.

Yours Sincerely,

For CJ Memorial Trust,

Trustee
